The In South Lake Union Blog is awesome! Their article taking an indepth look at Blanche, a new art installation in the not-yet-open Lake Union Park makes me excited to get out there and take a look at it!

The author writes, "The experience of taking in Blanche, however, is not limited to the movement of the water and the simple beauty of a hull. This installation also includes a sound feature that the artists refer to as "wave music" and is projected into the hull of the boat by underwater sound chambers made of pipes. Upon putting your ear up to the wave music speaker, you will be greeted with background noise reminiscent of didjeridu music punctuated by intermittent metallic lapping sounds. It's actually quite pleasant."

Cruise Lake Union on board the S.S. Virginia V with Historic Seattle

Where: S.S. Virginia V, moored at South Lake Union at the Center for Wooden Boats, 1010 Valley St. Seattle.

Registration: $50 Historic Seattle and Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) members and guests of members; $60 general public; $25 students

Pre-registration required no later than Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

To celebrate the 88^th anniversary of her maiden voyage, join Historic Seattle and the Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) on the S.S. Virginia V. Enjoy refreshments while learning about the past, present, and future of Lake Union, including the move by MOHAI to the Naval Reserve Training Center. Our presenters include Leonard Garfield, Executive Director of MOHAI, Betsy Davis, Executive Director of the Center for Wooden Boats, and Rich Haag, the landscape architect whose creative solutions have made Gasworks Park a national model for turning unused and polluted industrial sites into wonderful civic gathering places.

Kids of All Ages - Ship Model Class

Visiting Vessels at the Historic Ships Wharf

The Historic Ships Wharf at Lake Union Park is host to a variety of visiting vessels throughout the year.

Now you can learn about which vessels have visited in the past, and which are coming in the future. Most of these boats are historic vessels that are open to the public for dock-side tours, free boat rides on Sundays through The Center for Wooden Boats' CastOFF! program, or for private charters.

Vision at Lake Union Park

The Working Group at Lake Union Park meets twice monthly to plan events and activities to bring South Lake Union to life. From Sea Chantey Sings to Steam Engine Repair Workshops, from model boat building to learn-to-sail programs, there's a little something for everyone.

The Working Group has created a plan to accomplish a variety of goals, many of which include the programs mentioned above. This work plan is a vision and road map for sharing Northwest history at Lake Union Park through year-round exhibits and hands-on experiences.
